A surprisingly enjoyable read. I have to admit, the cover and blurb do this book no favours. I thought this was going to be the most generic YA fantasy... and I'm so glad I was proven wrong.
A chubby MC whose character transformation was probably the most believeable I've read in a while - because I really wasn't expecting it! Fans of Tamora Pierce will love this, the main character reminds me a lot of Tris from the Emelan series.
The only reason this doesn't have five stars is because the last quarter of the book felt... detached from the rest, like it was two drafts kind of cobbled together. Humberto just randomnly died, and then so did Alejandro... I mean, I'm glad it wasn't this weird love triangle but I just saw so much potential in those storylines, to suddenly cut them out seemed clunky. And the ending was a tiny bit weird, I mean, the amulet attaching to her stomach and 'spinning like a pinwheel'? I had enough trouble visualising and making my peace with the Godstone, it was just a little too much for me.
I highly recommend this to those who want something to break the stereotypical YA fantasy mold.
